Catrix de Contillie was born with a rare and unfortunate condition that made her highly intolerant to positive energy and, to a lesser degree, heat. The condition manifests itself as darkening of the vitreous humour and lightening of the pupil, making sight of the subject unnerving for most. It is so rare that it wasn’t immediately identified in young Catrix. Indeed, in her youth, when she suffered an accident her rich parents sent for the city’s best healers who proceeded to attempt to cure the young girl’s wounds, almost killing her in the process. A little experimentation and much funding later, the healers identified her condition and proceeded to heal her using negative energy. Unfortunately, this experiment left her permanently weakened despite her otherwise generally good health.
Although her queer appearance earned her the nickname Dread Catrix at a young age, she was never the target of much bullying. Her parents assumed it was because of her great, if somewhat cool, beauty, but, in many cases it was her strength of spirit that rallied others to her. To ensure a “good match’ Catrix’ parents hired a bardic tutor. It was quickly apparent that her voice though clear and strong was more suited to commands than song, but she took particularly well to the arcana lessons although her spells seemed like twisted versions of the originals. Where some particularly skilful bards learn to shape positive energies into curative spells, she shaped negative energy to cure herself, but harm others and where they used their charisma to power enchanting magic, she used hers to terrify and subdue. The first time she, as the bard called it, “tapped into her core” to produce curative magic, she also discovered that she had a much more direct conduit than her tutor. Indeed, she found that she could produce non-spell effects by directly manipulating the energy. This was a convenient way to fix minor bruises, but, at the time, she was unsure of what use this could be.
Two years ago, a competing influential family that had a grudge against Catrix’ family, tricked a group of naïve adventurers into attacking her parents. Under the impression that hers was a clan steeped in theft, murder and evil, they forced their way into the house, killed her mother and maimed her father. Believing in the innocence of youth they simply tried to restrain Catrix. She flew into a rage and killed two of the novice adventurers before they even knew what happened and drove another out, nigh-insane with fear, before the authorities arrived and arrested the remaining boy. The boy was found guilty of murder, but the authorities were never able to prove the involvement of the adventurers’ patron. Quickly, rumours of her actions that night spread through the town and the community started fearing her and de facto ostracizing her. With her father inconsolable over the death of her mother, this made every second she spent in town agonizing. So, with few choices left to her, she took some money and asked her mentor to help her arrange a life “away from the town”. From that day on, she’s felt a strange calling pulling her towards death, the dead and the undead.
Catrix is young, tall, slim, dark-haired, pale-skinned and could best be described as frighteningly beautiful.
